Personal Profile:

Personal Data:

1978-1982

B.S.,  Department of Biology, Nanjing University

1982-1988

Ph.D., Institute of Hydrobiology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Research Experience:

Dr. Song is interested in the study of toxic cyanobacteria and its harmful metabolites such as toxin and off-flavor substances. Realizing that the colonial Microcystis are often the dominant form of the species in the field, he compared the difference in tolerance of colonial and single cell Microcystis and illustrated the phenomena why the colonial form dominate in the fields. He is also interested in the exploration of the mechanism of production and environmental fate of microcystins. Recently, he focuses on the dynamics of cyanobacterial bloom in several large shallow lakes, trying to find, in a long endeavor, the driving force govering the succession of algal species in the changing aquatic environments.

Research Directions:

Ecology of toxic cyanobacteria and other bloom-forming algae

Aquatic eco-toxicology

Algal resources
