Personal Data:  

Graduated from Wuhan University in 1982. Studied in Marine Mammal Research Program of Texas A&M University at Galveston in USA for doctor dissertation from 1990–1993 under a China-America Joint Program, and was issued doctor degree in 1993 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Appointed as Research Professor and Director of the Department of River Dolphin Research (renamed as Research Group on Conservation Biology of Aquatic Animals in 2001) in 1996 by the Institute of Hydrobiology of CAS, and as deputy director of the Institute in 1999 by CAS (1999–2008). Appointed as Chairman of Academic Degrees Committee of the Institute in 2008. Editors of Acta Hydrobiologica Sinica and Acta Theriologica Sinica. Principal Subject Editor of “Environmental Science and Pollution Research” published in Germany. Secretary-General of Chinese MAB Committee, and Vice Director of Science, Technology and Environmental Protection Department of China Three Gorges Project Corporation. 1982–Now: Ecology, rearing, behaviour, acoustics and conservation of baiji, the Yangtze finless porpoise and some other aquatic animals at the Institute of Hydrobiology, CAS;

Research Directions:

Reproductive theoretics and technique for finless porpoise in captivity and semi-natural condition; Population dynamics monitoring and habitat conservation of Yangtze cetaceans and Chinese white dolphin in wild; Conservation genetics of Yangtze cetaceans and Chinese white dolphin; Endangered mechanism and conservation strategy for finless porpoise and Chinese white dolphin; Sonar mechanism and behavioural ecology of finless porpoise; Acoustic communication and vocal behaviour of finless porpoise, Chinese white dolphin, Chinese alligator, giant salamander and seals; Assessment on hydro-project’s impact on aquatic mammals, bio-diversity and conservation strategy.

Rewarded the Second Grade Prize of the Advanced Scientific and Technological Award of Hubei Province in 1988, the Third Grade Prize of Advanced Scientific and Technological Award of the Country in 1989, the First Grade Prize of the President Scholarship of CAS in 1989, WWF Prince Bernhard Scholarship Fund for Nature Conservation in 1991, the Second Grade Prize of the Youthful Scientist Award of CAS in 1993, and First Grade Prize of the Advanced Scientific and Technological Award of Hubei Province in 2008.
